I do a lot of work with VM’s and often add and remove devices on the fly, sometimes this causes issues with network devices where an IP address was defined against a network card that is now gone, unfortunately the OS still has a record of the IP so it give warnings and error messages when you try to re-use the IP on a new interface. A handy way to display the missing devices is:

  1. open a DOS CMD window
  2. Type “set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1”
  3. The start device manager with “devmgmt.msc”

The missing devices will correctly display in a dimmed colour, you can then remove them and the warnings and errors are no long generated.
